Verify the fitted system
Request a demonstration of the actual tailgate rather than a specification screenshot from another model year. Record which controls are fitted and which functions the seller claims. A remote release, powered opening and hands-free sensor are not interchangeable descriptions. Check the build identity and any retrofit declaration. If aftermarket equipment has been installed, ask for its documentation and service route. Avoid valuing an unverified feature as factory equipment simply because the switch or badge resembles one shown in a brochure.
Observe a normal operating cycle
With a clear area and the vehicle secured, have the inspector operate the tailgate as prescribed. Note hesitation, unusual noise, uneven movement or failure to latch. Do not place hands or objects in the path to test obstruction protection. If that function requires assessment, a qualified technician should follow the approved procedure. Record whether the problem is repeatable and the conditions in which it occurs. A single successful cycle after repeated attempts should not be described as a consistent pass without explaining the earlier behaviour.
Check alignment and surrounding repairs
Examine panel gaps, hinges, latch area, trim and accessible wiring for evidence that warrants closer inspection. A poorly closing tailgate may relate to adjustment, a component fault or prior damage; inspection is needed before choosing a cause. Compare the opening with the body repair history. New paint or replaced trim is not automatically disqualifying, but the associated work should be explained. Photograph findings before any adjustment so the record distinguishes the original condition from the final repaired result.
Assess seals and the luggage compartment
Look for dampness, staining, corrosion or unusual odour around accessible luggage-floor areas and seals. Ask whether water entry occurs after rain or washing. Do not assume every wet area originates at the tailgate; other body openings or repairs can be involved. A controlled workshop investigation is preferable to pouring water indiscriminately into channels. Keep the roof and water-ingress checks separate but connected. The aim is to identify the path and remedy, not simply dry the carpet before handover.
Match opening height to the destination
Measure the available garage height and rear clearance, then compare them with the actual vehicle's operating envelope. Where a supported opening-height setting exists, ask for a demonstration and record how it is used according to the manual. A setting cannot make an unsuitable parking space safe in every condition. Include slope, nearby objects and the buyer's reach in the assessment. If loading happens in tight urban parking, a smaller convenient opening may matter more than the maximum advertised cargo capacity.
Include repair and parts costs
For a fault, request a diagnosis before pricing motors, struts, switches or control units. The visible symptom does not identify the failed part. Obtain a quote tied to the VIN, including setup or adjustment where required, and confirm local support. A seller's promise to include a loose replacement part does not establish a completed repair. Add the remedy to the preparation budget and define the final check. If the issue is accepted unrepaired, state its effect on access and usability explicitly.
Test with the intended luggage
A useful final demonstration includes the buyer's largest routine luggage item or reliable dimensions, with the rear seats positioned as they will be used. Check that the item can pass through the opening and be secured without obstructing closure. Do not use the powered mechanism to compress an overfilled load. For a family buyer, include stroller handling and the height of the load floor. This turns a feature demonstration into a practical acceptance check and prevents a working mechanism from masking an unsuitable daily loading arrangement.
Buyer checklist
- Separate factory, retrofitted and unverified equipment.
- Observe normal operation without unsafe obstruction tests.
- Investigate water entry and alignment rather than assuming a simple motor fault.
- Confirm clearance, luggage fit and the repair outcome.
Questions and answers
Does every Tayron have hands-free opening?
No universal claim should be made. Verify the exact vehicle and its documented equipment; a powered tailgate does not by itself prove a hands-free function.
Should I accept a promised replacement motor?
Only after diagnosis establishes the remedy and the agreement defines who installs and verifies it. A loose part is not the same as a completed repair.
